MAINTAINING OUR CREATIVE FREEDOM - AUGUST 2025 - THOMAS & MUSE MONTHLY

Maintaining our creative freedom in our work is one of the most challenging things that we face. We often feel like we are ‘swimming against the tide’ which is fine with us (as artists), but sometimes the natural ebb and flow of the waters feels like an unnatural flood. This week the full force of the ‘Online Safety Act’ has come into effect. We support this (in principle). We believe that certain things should only be seen by consenting adults. However, the interpretation of this act is where problems can arise. We believe that freedom of speech and freedom of expression must be maintained in all areas of life but unfortunately the subjectivity of this area has not been fully considered throughout the implementation of this bill. We are now left to negotiate this tricky area and most likely spending much of our time reassuring people that they don’t necessarily have to be outraged by our work.
